STREAM

Throughout the nation’s schools, the idea of educating students for the future by emphasizing the subject areas of STEM — Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math — has been driven by the business community. In more recent years, many who were invested in improving education recognized that our economy is also driven by the “Arts” and thus STEM became known by many as STEAM — Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math. Today, Catholic schools have brought this important initiative a step further with the creation of STREAM.

What is STREAM?

STREAM is rooted in our faith as a Catholic school. “Religion” is found in all our subject areas and completes our view of a comprehensive Catholic education. SJA, as a STREAM school, uses an interdisciplinary approach that bridges science, technology, religion, engineering, arts, and mathematics.

It is important to note that STREAM is a philosophical framework that provides for a cross-curricular approach that enables students to “connect” what they are learning throughout their studies.

Points to Consider

STREAM makes learning relevant because it allows academic concepts to be “joined” together  to create real-life applications. It focuses on the “why are we learning this?” question.

STREAM emphasizes interdisciplinary connections. In the real world, knowledge needed is not experienced in isolation, it is layered. It requires deeper understanding across specific disciplines.
